Hospital Glam: It's Possible and It's Comfortable

Good old Southern Comfort.  When I'm sick, I watch Vampire Diaries, eat shrimp and grits, and drink apple cider mixed with Southern Comfort.  I lay about in kimonos and wear fuzzy socks with my favorite Korean boy bands on them.  But that's when I'm sick for a day.

My good friend's mother has been recently diagnosed with cancer.  Fearing there was nothing I could do, other than to send a cliche bouquet of flowers and a naked Ricky Martin poster, I looked to my illustrious talents.  The last thing someone is worried about when they are diagnosed with cancer is how they appear to others, but I think glamorizing just a tad can do wonders to uplift the spirits.  Per my friend's request, here are some ensembles that will have the doctors running to Nordstrom for their own fabulous comfort-wear.

Some of the most comfortable things I own include a Duke sweatshirt and stretch pants.  They are not glamorous by any stretch of the imagination, but the following things are pretty and comfortable.  I suggest pretty kimonos, real cashmere, lacy robes, and decorative leggings.  Please keep in mind that the items featured below are ideas.  I would never spend more than $30 on a robe, while some of the things below are extremely expensive.

OOOOH the Caftan.  LET'S GET ONE THING STRAIGHT.  THEY ARE NOT MUMUS!  I BARELY KNOW WHAT  A MUMU IS BUT IT IS NOT A CAFTAN!  I adore a brightly colored caftan.  They're my version of sweatpants.  They are easy to slip on and off, comfortable, and come in a variety of fabrics:  Silk, satin, polyester, or cotton.  One can easily wear leggings or nothing else underneath.  Throw on a turban and all of a sudden you're Lana Turner.  Also, there are tons in vintage shops.  Throw a spit ball in a vintage store and I promise you'll hit one.  Short ones are available but the longer ones are truly more glamorous.  Many billow, but I prefer the ones that align with the silhouette of the body.

When all else fails...throw on a neon cape

Just kidding.
Alex R. asked me during one of our many facebook chats how a man can wear a cape successfully.  I'll start by giving you a list of people who don't wear them well:  Dracula, Superman, Elvis, and Andre Leon Talley.  What all these men have in common is that they wear capes that are too long, too cumbersome, and too dramatic.  I know dramatic; I was voted most dramatic by Black Duke Class of 2008.

Say no to drugs, kids
I appreciate this cape for its workmanship, but it's straight up fug.  He looks like a volcanic Easter Egg.

This gentleman looks perfect.  The colors are muted, there is not a lot of bulk, the top button is casually undone, he doesn't look like Mary Poppins, the length hits him right above the knee, and the shirt underneath is crisp.  If you're going to wear a cape, make sure everything else is slim cut.  You won't look like the Liberty Bell I promise.  With bulky clothes underneath you will look like an oozing blueberry muffin.  I only mention blueberry because I would like one this very second.

This is not a man cape, but if you plan on wearing fur, please avoid creatures like this.  You will look like you got in a fight with a rag tag possum gang and happened to win due to an unfair sucker punch.  Fur capes should be less than four pelts sewn together.  You definitely want to avoid looking like a ghetto bird.

I love you Eddard Stark.  This has nothing to do with the post except that he is wearing a cape.  But he lives in Middle Earth or Heaven or something so his Dracula cape doesn't count in the avoid pile.  RIP 100th Sean Bean character to die on film.

Neon and Man Capes

I was asked over gchat and facebook about the neon trend and how to wear a cape if you're a man.  Thanks Katrina and Alex!  Those questions will be addressed shortly.  Tomorrow actually.  I have to watch the latest Game of Thrones (ooooh my boo Jon Snow is scrumptious) and do a facial so neon and capes are not high on the Wednesday priority list.  Welp, I'll give you a preview.  Only brown people look good in neon and that's if they're going for a new jack swing kinda Keith Sweat/Teddy Riley/Jodie Watley lipsyncing on Soul Train vibe.  Men can wear capes as long as they're not shiny.

Toodles!

I borrowed this picture.  I'm not witty enough to come up with memes.
